Mobile Operator O2 to Enter Fixed Line Market

The fixed line market will have another new provider soon with O2 announcing the launch of its services here by next month. The provider is UK’s largest mobile operator.

Originally part of the British Telecom group, O2 was spun off in 2001 and was acquired in 2005, by a Spanish firm, Telefonica, which is still its parent company.

In order to compete with other providers in the UK market, O2 is keen on expanding the range of services and products it currently offers. The soon-to-be-launched fixed line service will satisfy the demand for a top quality service here in UK markets, according to sources. They say that many customers are dissatisfied with the existing services in this area.

To begin with the fixed line will be offered only to existing O2 users. It will form part of a package which will include all the three services, namely mobile broadband, fixed-line broadband and landline phone, offered by O2 and will also be available at a discounted price for those who take up all three. O2 already has mobile voice calls, mobile broadband and home broadband in its product range. The fixed line service is viewed as the next logical step in expansion. Company sources say that this fixed product will be very competitively priced (click to compare broadband prices).

Once it enters this market, O2 will be a contender to its erstwhile parent, BT.
