Honest Information Concerning Botox
B.tox is now established amongst Sydney’s fashionable set and has become an integral part of a beauty routine for people in the city. But I never fail to be surprised when I listen to the stories in connection with the treatment. To follow are some of the misunderstandings which we come across frequently at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.
Mistaken Belief # 1: I may lose the ability to express emotion!
Below the skin of the face are approximately sixty muscles. The facial muscles usually function harmoniously, but from continual movement fine lines may appear. Too many doses of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the forehead becoming less taut. The dose used by almost all physicians result in you seeming well rested, nevertheless you will always maintain your natural expression.
By using a carefully calculated amount of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right spot one can achieve a reduction in the fine lines without compromising facial expression.
Mistaken Belief # 2: Botulinum is a poison!
Actually there is a little truth in this statement. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact pharmaceutical terminology. Too great a dose can loosen muscles that you do not want loosened and can even make one very ill.
However to put everything into perspective: an ancient pharmacist’s expression is that ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. Every medication will make a person ill in large enough amounts. Water can be a poison if too much is taken.
Mistaken Belief # 3: Wrinkle injections hurt!
The hypodermic needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than a human hair. A lot of people state that the treatments are not worse than being bit by bugs. It is certainly less painful than something like a blood test.
Mistaken Belief # 4: My face will lose sensation!
Completely untrue. B.tox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax muscles is affected by B.tox injections.

Mistaken Belief # 5. You must keep getting B.tox or you will develop even worse wrinkles than earlier!
This is also wrong.
A treatment lasts approximately 3 months. Subsequent injections do last a few weeks more. The lines will gradually re-emerge as the muscle returns to normal. Nevertheless your wrinkles will not be worse than when you began your treatment.
In fact the wrinkles should be be softer than if you hadn’t had B.tox injections – even if you never continue the treatment. This, of course is typically because your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ when the B.tox was active.
