Holidays On Horseback
Whether you are a thrill-seeking daredevil or a committed “Happy Hacker”, there is sure to be a riding holiday to suit you .
The choice of country and terrain is enormous and you can opt for a blissful week of escape from the family in beautiful and unspoilt surroundings. Alternatively, make it a family treat – even if some of the clan are totally non-horsey.
The first thing to consider with any riding holiday is your true level of riding ability and stamina. A weekend-only novice will be neither safe nor happy on a mad three day gallop across Botswana. Similarly, a week trekking with beginners at walk will not appeal to experienced jockeys. The large number of riding holiday providers generally accept the following as sensible summaries of riding ability;-
Beginner: A rider with very limited experience, is unable to mount and dismount unassisted, and unable to post to the trot or canter.
Novice: A rider who has some riding experience, is able to mount and dismount unassisted, is in control of a well-behaved horse and confident for short periods of rising trot and canter.
Intermediate: A rider with all of the novice skills, has a firm seat, is comfortable at all paces and capable of riding for several hours at a time. The intermediate rider is also able to tack up a horse if required.
Experienced: A competent and regular rider who is capable of adapting to different horses in different environments. An experienced rider has soft hands and is able to control a spirited horse in open country.
Other points to consider.
Weight Limit
Some riding trips have a weight limit which generally appears to be approximately 95 kilos (around 15 stones). In most cases you will be provided with a bigger horse and in some instances there will be a surcharge but it is always wise to contact your holiday provider as there may be a limited number of horses available for guests exceeding this weight level.
Children
Depending on the trip, children may join the ride. Discounts may be available in some cases. It is definitely worth checking even if the kids are staunchly anti-Equestrian as many of the holiday providers can accommodate non-riding guests.
Insurance
This is an absolute must for any holiday and should be an important consideration in booking your trip.
Preparing for your holiday
Once you have determined the riding experience, age and ability of the group members, you can go ahead and book your holiday. Whether you are experienced riders or not, you are still likely to be spending considerably longer than usual in the saddle on a daily basis so expect some aches and pains!
Many repeat riding holiday enthusiasts go on several short riding weekends prior to a longer holiday so that they can really get the best out of the experience on every level.
With riding holidays available in England, Scotland Wales and Ireland, we have plenty of choice on our doorsteps but there is a huge choice of trips in France, USA, and even Africa and Asia. The choice is yours….

Bring the Kids! A Parent’s Guide to Stress-Free Travel
Traveling with “little ones” can be one of the most joyous events of all–it can also be one of the most stressful. While seeing the wonder in your children’s eyes as they gaze upon some historic or natural wonder may make your heart swell with pride, you must realize they’ll eventually get bored or tired, and you’ll have to revert back to your roles of referee, peace keeper, and entertainment chairperson.
My mother-in-law used to tell the story of traveling in the car with five children under the age of five. Someone was always asking “How much longer?” to which her husband routinely answered “Only 10 more minutes.” When she protested, he responded, “They just want an answer – any answer will do!” As a mother of five grown children, I’ve had better luck telling the truth, and then finding something creative to do.
In order to keep your sanity and actually enjoy some of the travel spots you take your children to, follow some simple pre- planning and travel organizing tips. Before you know it, you’ll be looking forward to family travel–no matter how many children tag along.
1. Go to age appropriate locations. If you want your children to enjoy their travel experience, make sure you take them to places suited to their age. This doesn’t mean every trip has to involve a theme park or sports event; it simply means keep the trip’s educational value at a level they can comprehend and appreciate. If your children’s’ ages span a wide range, have at least one activity geared to each child. Picking a hotel with a pool can make a big difference!
2. Lay the ground rules early. Before you even leave the house, make sure your children know what is and isn’t acceptable behavior on the road. As elementary as this may seem, if you don’t tell your children what you expect, how can they oblige?
3. Let the children pack their own travel bag. Make sure the children’s bag is small enough that they can carry it. If they can read, a parent can make a packing list. Include things they can do on the road or in the air–a Walkman and tapes, comic books, handheld video games, etc. Decide ahead of time about seating arrangements and make contingency plans in case requested seats are not available.
4. Establish a meeting place. Nothing could be worse that having a child get lost in an unfamiliar environment. Whenever you visit a location, identify a spot the family can meet at if you happen to get separated. Equally important, have some current photos of your children available. That way others can help you locate your lost child. If your child can tell time, make sure they take a watch!
5. Make the children a part of the trip by letting them help plan. Your children will enjoy the trip more if they feel they have some say on the agenda. Get books from the library, or do an Internet search, on the area you plan to visit. Give them some options of what to do while away and actually use some of their suggestions. Who knows, you may enjoy their suggestions more than you think.
6. Keep a separate list for each child’s belongings. Keep a running list of everything your children need on the trip. If more than two children will be traveling with you, keep a separate list for each child. Otherwise the items begin to run together, and it’s difficult to determine if you really have enough supplies for each child. It’s amazing how many people forget to pack basic necessities for their children like toothbrushes, socks, and shoes.
7. Pack a first aid kit Face it. Kids will be kids. That means scraped knees, bug bites, and cuts and bruises. When traveling with children, always keep a first aid kit handy. It’ll help get rid of the tears and bring back the smiles and fun times.
8. Check for children travel specials. It’s amazing how many people spend more time planning what they’re going to have for breakfast than how they’re going to spend a week or two on the road. A fun, well-planned travel experience will create memories that can last a lifetime. Plus, pre-planning can save you lots of money. Many airlines, restaurants, and hotels offer discounts for children, whether it’s a “kids stay or eat free” deal or a “half off children’s rate.” If you’re a do-it-yourself-er, surf the Internet for travel web sites. You can usually find some great deals if you’re willing to take the time and look for them. Most important, bring the right attitude. Traveling with children will always present some challenges. Spend more time enjoying the precious memories you’ll be creating and less time fretting over what could go wrong. Keep your sense of humor in full swing and happy traveling.

Tips for Travelling Abroad – Travel Checklists for Travellers
Although most trips abroad are trouble free, being prepared will go a long way to avoiding the possibility of serious trouble. If you are travelling abroad here are some of things you need to do to make your trip easier:
1. Check the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) Travel Advice (call 0845 850 2829) for Public Announcements or Travel Warnings for the countries you plan to visit. Public Announcements provide fast-breaking information about relatively short-term conditions that may pose risks to the security of travellers.
2. Get a good guidebook and get to know your destination. Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs of the countries to which you are travelling. While in a foreign country, you are subject to that country’s laws. Learn about the countries that you plan to visit. Before departing, take the time to do some research about the people and their culture, and any problems that the country is experiencing that may affect your travel plans.
3. Get travel insurance and check that the cover is appropriate and check what vaccinations you need 2 months before you travel. Also, consider whether you need to take extra health precautions. Make sure your insurance covers your emergency medical needs (including medical evacuation) while you are overseas.
4. Take enough money for your trip and some back-up funds such as traveller’s cheques, sterling or US dollars.
5. To avoid being a target of crime, try not to wear conspicuous clothing and expensive jewellery and do not carry excessive amounts of money or unnecessary credit cards.
6. While abroad, avoid using illicit drugs or drinking excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages, and associating with people who do.
7. In order to avoid violating local laws, deal only with authorized agents when you exchange money or purchase art or antiques.
8. If your travel involves passage on airlines with which you are unfamiliar, you may wish to check their safety and reliability with a reputable travel agent.
9. Do not leave your luggage unattended in public areas and do not accept packages from strangers.
10. Ensure you have a valid passport that is in good condition and the necessary visas, if required.
11. Make several copies of your passport, insurance policy plus 24-hour emergency number, and ticket details. Leave these copies, your itinerary and contact details with family and friends. Carry the other copies with you in a separate place from your passport. This will facilitate replacement if your passport is lost or stolen.
12. Ensure that your travel organiser or travel agent can provide sufficient evidence of security for the refunding and repatriation of consumers in the event of insolvency. This security must be in place by one of several Financial Protection Organisations.
13. Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends at home so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency.
Best Travel Accessories
Checking accessories that you need in traveling
So, finally you have found the time for your deserving break. You have already planned what to do on the big trip. Everything seems to be prepared. But what happens when you forget your favorite digicam and you only discovered it when you’re already nearing the point of your destination?
Why does it happen that every time you go out of town, you always forget an item or accessory that you only remember after you left the house? If you are lucky, you usually forget small things like a toothbrush, where you can buy one in the nearest store.
But what happens if you forget, for example, your digicam? Or how about your raincoat in a rainy season? How about the travel supplies you usually forget? If you’re lucky, it’s a simple accessory like a toothbrush, which any hotel will have in their gift shop. But what if you forgot a more important product, for example, a rain coat? Or a backpack you’ll be using for a hiking trip?
What are all the travel accessories you need?
When going on trips, whether it is big or small, check out if you have a complete set of your travel accessories. What accessories should I bring? Among the most obvious are:
- Suitcases
- Travel clothing
- Toiletries
-Travel appliances (electric razor, travel alarm, hairdryer)
These, however, are just the basic accessories. You will see that the more you travel, the more you need things other than suitcases, toiletries, and travel clothing and appliances. For example, did you think that you should have brought a small nice neck pillow in a long train ride or flight? Or, what if you get bruised from a hiking trip, do you have a first-aid kit close at hand?
Here are some accessories that you might want to bring when you take your next trip:
- Binoculars
- Music player
- Mini-flashlight
- Camera
- Clothing steamer
- Mini-umbrella
- Luggage rack
- Door alarm
- First-aid kit
It would not be surprising that you might have additional options to this list, or you might have a list entirely different from the list above. And when you check out stores and Internet sites that sell travel accessories, you would learn that there are many products out there that you thought you never needed but turned out to be the contrary!
Hotels and Motels-Booking Online Has Never Been Easier
Oh the joys of traveling. Most of us have had both good and bad experiences over the years, but what usually kick starts the trip off to either a fine or poor start is the accommodation. It’s so important for the owners of holiday lodgings to create a welcoming feeling on arrival. Whatever the type of business, there’s never a second chance to make a first impression, and the hotels and motels of the world are certainly no exception to that rule.
Obviously, all the glossy brochures and posters promoting the hotels and motels are going to create great visual impact, but just how much of what we see in these illustrated ads actually bear a resemblance to the places in reality?
The search for fine hotels and motels starts by knowing how to locate them. Years ago this was no easy feat as all we had to go on were a few brochures and a bit of a hard sell from the travel agents. Thanks to the internet, those methods are now in the dark ages of travel and tourism.
The best thing about the booming travel industry world wide is the availability of the hotels and motels that have sprung up literally everywhere. An abundance of places to stay has created some healthy competition among hoteliers and that can only be good for customers in terms of both the quality and affordability of available lodgings.
If you already know you destination or general geographical preference, you can simply hop online and log onto Google or one of the other great search engines out there. With Google at your disposal, just type in your destination and within a millisecond you’ll have a whole bunch of hotels and motel to browse through based on your search terms.
On my last trip to Orlando, I made great use of the World Wide Web a few months prior to the trip. It was so easy to find a choice of 4 and 5 star hotels and up-market motels to choose from. Each one of the hotels and motels that I short listed had their won website. It was just fantastic to get recent pictures of the layout, the rooms, the restaurants and the recreational areas, plus of course, the latest prices and promotions. A few of these places actually had online virtual tours which gave panoramic scrolling views of the establishment.
Whether you are someone who travels a lot on business or just a care-free holiday-goer who loves to take trips, I strongly recommend you do all your searching for hotels and motels online. Even if you have some loyalty in places you’ve stayed for years, why not jump online and see what’s available? You’ll be truly amazed at the variety in quality, location, and cost that’s around these days. Oh, and let’s not forget to mention the terrific promotions that get thrown out there from time to time, and yes, many of these special deals are available to internet booker only.

Valentine’s Day – What Is The Logic?
Today’s lovers and tomorrows foes. How much time does it take to turn love into hatred? If the love was that of love at first sight, then the hatred will also come within that much short time. Why does this happen? How does it happen that those who live for each other, become bitter foes? That is as much a mystery as the love itself. To find out why the lovers turn into foes, we must first find out how they became lovers. That is another mystery. Why should two people fall in love?
Indeed, why should two people, who many a times share very few common things fall in love? Is it looks? The manners? The intelligence? What attracts both to each other that many a times lovers commit suicide if separated. It is said that human race is a logical race. Everything we do is governed by logic. But is there any logic in love? One man may be meeting many girls during work, while socializing, but falls in love with one after few years. The same applies to many women. What is this? How does this happen? Ask a lover about why he/she fell in love with a particular person and you will get answers that will further confuse the enquiry.
Are we logical at all? Or are we totally governed by heart and take some steps that look absolutely illogical and many times idiotic? The truth is apparent. A human being is made of so many emotions that to try and analyze the personality is practically impossible. If it was that simple, no war would have taken place.
Coming to better things in life, why talk of negatives? Why not let positive thoughts make all of us feel better?
As I said earlier, we human beings call ourselves logical, but most of the times act in ways that will sound very illogical. Till we find the solution to this puzzle, let us enjoy life.

Creative And Inexpensive Gift Ideas
I have a friend who works at a loan company. She starts getting busy around August — because her offices are flooded with people taking out loans for their holiday shopping. And she stays busy well into the new year — because a huge percentage of those people default on their loans. Why do we feel compelled to go so deeply in DEBT buying gifts? It seems as though every year the bar is raised — we are expected to spend more and more.
And where does all this spending get us? I can’t tell you how many of my organizing clients have literally piles of old Christmas gifts buried in their closets — items for which they really have no use, but feel guilty about cleaning out. I’m pretty sure that the holidays are not supposed to be about debt, guilt, and clutter! But you can also take steps on the “giving” side to make the holiday less stressful — for both you and the recipient:
LIMIT THE NUMBER OF GIFTS PER PERSON
Some families feel like they need to have lots of presents under the tree for it to be a happy holiday. We finally had to ask our family to stop loading us down with a lot of “stuff” each year (although in much nicer terms!) We have limited our giving to one gift per person. And it’s made such a positive impact (less pressure, stress, and expense) that no one complains about having less to open on Christmas morning!
DRAW A NAME
I learned this technique from a big family (we’re talking 12 kids plus grandkids and extended family!) that couldn’t afford to buy gifts for everyone. Each year, they all put names in a hat — everyone pulls a name and buys a gift for that one person. That way, everyone gets a gift, and no one has to feel strapped during the holidays. then they plan a big party on Christmas morning where everyone opens their gifts.
FOOD IS ALWAYS A GREAT GIFT
Food is a great option — especially when you like to give a little something to everyone you know. Bake a huge batch of cookies or make sausage balls — or even the dreaded fruitcake (it’s actually pretty good when it’s homemade!) Then wrap a small bundle in colored cellophane and top with a bow. It’s festive, it’s inexpensive, it comes from the heart, it will eventually disappear (reducing clutter) — and everyone loves to eat!
MAKE YOUR OWN GIFT BASKETS
Gift baskets have become the hip and happening gift over the last few years. You can customize the contents to the recipient’s interests and hobbies. But paying a gift basket company to put one together for you can cost more than a traditional store-bought gift. I will shop sales throughout the year finding neat little “gizmos” that would go well in a gift basket — a kitchen tool for my sister who loves to cook or something “cow” themed for my friend — and stash them away until the holidays. I also look for practical (a colander) or funky (a cow-shaped cookie jar) containers to use in place of the basket. The result is a gift that I had fun putting together, that really means something to the recipient, and that costs less than looks like it should!
GIVE AN EXPERIENCE RATHER THAN A THING
You don’t always have to give “stuff” when a gifting occasion comes around. Some of the best presents I have ever received were events rather than “things.” And they don’t have to be expensive — one memorable gift for me was a day out with my friends at a state park (hiking, canoeing, and a picnic lunch). You can build some great memories, spend some quality time — and you don’t have to worry about your gift getting dusty or broken!
GIVE A HANDMADE GIFT
Handmade gifts have gotten a bad rap in the past — as being cheesy or poorly made. But you can put together some pretty cool handmade gifts. At least half of my Christmas decorations are made by someone in my family — and I get compliments each year on how nice they look. With craft stores springing up in abundance around the country, you can find tons of great high-quality, low-cost gift ideas. Handmade gifts have a “homey” feel that bought presents often lack — and you get the satisfaction of knowing that you created it yourself. And if you really want to turn on the old heart light, give a gift that one of your kids made!
GIVE A GIFT CERTIFICATE
Gift certificates have also gotten a bad reputation — you couldn’t think of anything else, so you got a gift certificate. I happen to think that gift certificates are an excellent option, because it allows the person to get what they really WANT or NEED. And your gift certificates don’t have to be store-bought. You can give gift certificates for chores or events — babysitting or a night on the town. I recently gave a friend of mine a gift certificate for a day of horseback riding and sushi (?!) — two things her husband doesn’t care for — and she loved it.
MAKE A CHARITABLE DONATION
This gift shows the real spirit of the season. You can choose from a variety of non-profit organizations — from adopting a whale to planting a tree to making a contribution to the Kidney Foundation. And hopefully your selflessness and concern for those around you will inspire others to do the same.
GIVE A PIECE OF NOSTALGIA
One year, I made photo albums for my sisters. I gathered up pictures of our parents and grandparents, them as children, family events we had attended together, and important moments in their lives. It was simple and inexpensive and I had a nice trip down memory lane putting it together. And I don’t know if I’ve ever gotten a better response to a Christmas gift. Anything that reminds people of the “good old days” is always well-received.

Hampshire – Mild, Convenient, and Full of Variety
The southern English county of Hampshire is only two hours from London by car or by frequent rail services. The county has much to offer regardless whether you seek fast moving cities, rural open countryside, or beaches and boat trips.
On the coast you will find the bustling fierce rival city ports of Portsmouth, (fighting ships), and Southampton, (merchant and cruise liners). In Portsmouth you must visit the historic dockyard. Go on board Horatio Nelson’s flagship “Victory”, check out the “Warrior” and Henry the eighth’s “Mary Rose” which is still undergoing restoration after being raised from the seabed. Take an hour’s cruise to the Isle of Wight and see Britain’s biggest yachting extravaganza at Cowes week. Southampton is the traditional homes of the Cunarder Queen liners. It still is, and fabulous views can be had of the spectacular liners coming and going up Southampton water from Calshot beach in the south of the county.
To the west of Southampton lies the tranquillity of the New Forest. The New Forest was established in the eleventh century by William the first as his personal hunting grounds. Thousands of wild ponies, deer, cattle, donkeys, and at certain times of the year pigs can be seen all over the forest running free. Drive with care at all times! Good months to visit are early May to take in and photograph the foaling season, and September, to see the roundup, known locally as the drift, when all the ponies are rounded up and branded and checked for health problems.
If you go walking in the forest, and you can go just about anywhere and it costs nothing, ensure you wear stout shoes as the Forest is the stronghold of Britain’s only poisonous snake, the adder. All the town’s stock antidote these days and deaths are unheard of, but an adder bite can still inflict nasty pain. Bites are very rare, adders are small snakes that rush off into the undergrowth, but just in case you should stand on one, good shoes are a must.
Check out Lyndhurst in the centre of the forest, Burley for the witches, I kid you not, Brockenhurst for the ponies, restaurants, hotels, and main line quick rail links, and lastly Lymington for sailing and interesting shops and antiques. To the north east of the county you will find Winchester, Hampshire’s third city and the county town. This is a smaller ancient city boasting an impressive Cathedral, burial place of Jane Austen, as well as the monument to King Alfred, he of the burning of the cakes fame, Wessex’s own ancient king.
There are ample opportunities for golf, sailing, and riding, and fly fishing too on the three majestic rivers, Itchen, Test and Avon. They can provide fishing on rivers as beautiful as you will find anywhere. If sea fishing is your thing check out Lymington where boat trips are to be had all year round. Hampshire is unquestionably one of England’s most beautiful counties and a week would never be enough to take in all it has to offer. Why not stay for two? There is a wide variety of accommodation available from small inexpensive boarding houses to international standard hotels, cottages to riverside marina apartments. You can see thousands of cottages, villas and apartments worldwide on my web site now at www.pebblebeachmedia.co.uk.
