Viva Las Vegas, Y’all!
I just got back from Las Vegas!
Man oh man, it was my first visit ever, and let me tell y’all, if there was ever a town I fell in love with at first glance, it’s Las Vegas! It has The Brotherhood’s name written all over it, in fact, if there ever was ever a town that I’ll need to visit regularly for the rest of my life after only one visit, it’s Las Vegas!
I went out there for a speaking engagement related to some of my writing activities. Even though I spoke for only twenty minutes in a tiny conference room in one of the big strip hotels, I can now say, for all eternity, that “I’ve played Vegas!” I was out there for all of two days, which now makes me a certified Vegas authority. And because I’m now so knowledgeable, here’s some unique things y’all can expect to see if you ever make a trip out there:
1. Some huge hotels – I thought I had seen some large hotels in places like New York City and Chicago, but nothing compares to these big mamas out in Vegas. You have the Luxor, which literally looks like a pyramid with a light shining out of the top. You have Mandalay Bay, well, actually there are two Mandalay Bays now, and they both have copper colored windows in their rooms. They also have eleven acres of swimming pools and a huge shark aquarium. The owner of Mandalay Bay obviously likes fish, and probably also likes having a little something on the property to help keep the guests in line. Let’s also not forget Caesar’s Palace, which is huge, and the Venetian, which is even larger. There’s one place called Excaliber that looks like a castle because one actually sits right at the entrance to it, Paris Las Vegas has a replica of the Eiffel Tower standing right next to it, one called the Stratosphere has an 1100 foot tower built close by (get this, there’s a roller coaster on top of it), and the grandest Vegas hotel of them all is the Bellagio. Collectively, these have to be the most unique hotels in the world.
2. More gambling than you could ever imagine – every big motel has a casino, and you can’t get to anything without going through the casino first. I’m serious, if you want to go to your room, you’ve gotta go through the casino, if you want to eat at a motel restaurant, you’ve gotta go through the casino, and remember this – if you need to go to the bathroom, don’t wait til it’s leg quivering time to go, because you’ll have to go through the casino to get to it as well. Something tells me that those Vegas motel security people won’t like guests who whiz all over their carpets or slot machines.
3. Women, women, and women! There’s something unusual goin’ on in Vegas, something I can’t quite explain but still want to tell y’all about. The women in Vegas must be extra friendly, and the reason I know that is that they actually have people standing out on the streets handing out cards with their names and telephone numbers on them. Isn’t that the friendliest thing you’ve ever heard of? Where else could you go and experience hospitality like this? How Vegas has managed to get so many friendly women all in one place is something I’ll never figure out…
4. The shows! I saw Little Richard in the Orleans Motel and Casino Showroom, and man was he was great! Also performing on the strip were Gladys Knight, Celine Dion, a whole bunch of Elvis impersonators, and many, many more top flight entertainers. There were also some topless reviews, as they like to get naked at some of these Vegas clubs, but being the highly conservative type person that I am I didn’t dare visit any of them. Topless women, the nerve!
Folks, I’m already at the end of this column and I’m still just getting started, I haven’t even mentioned the great food, the thrill rides, the sightseeing, and a whole lot more. Because of that, I’m already in close consultation with Brothers Pippin and Foskey regarding the planning for our first ever Brotherhood visit to Las Vegas. Right now we’re envisioning this as a yearly type ritual, but that’s always up for negotiation, to do the proper research we may need several trips out there every year. Can y’all imagine Hugh, the Pip, and I all together out on the Vegas strip? Out in the middle of Sin City? I sure can!

Why Florida? Here’s Why…
So, I’m sitting here in my beachfront condo on the Gulf coast of Florida. I am thinking to myself, why would anyone want to travel to Florida? You can go anywhere in the United States or the World for that matter. So, why would you want to travel to one of the top destinations in the world? Here’s why…
Florida has everything you could want in a vacation. That is why we venture there quite often and also have devoted an entire website about it.
What do I mean? Well, again I am sitting there writing this down, overlooking the Gulf. The smell of the sea, the breeze penetrating my every pore, the beauty and mystery it brings, and the peace you’ll feel will overcome you immediately.
If you live a hectic schedule and have a tough time relaxing, this will never be a problem when you are sitting beachfront. It all reminded me of a great quote from the movie, Forrest Gump, “You don’t know where the earth ends and heaven begins.”
Besides the ocean, Florida offers an array of activities that you will ultimately enjoy… For example, walk the breathtaking beaches, drive up and down the coast, or enjoy water activities like boating, fishing, skiing, windsailing, snorkeling and so forth. You can also play golf on many of the top courses in the country. What about finding romance (we saw a gorgeous beach wedding), heading to theme parks and Orlando, spend tons of money shopping, or take in the most unbelievable sunsets and views that you’ve ever seen.
I could go on and on, but the point is that Florida offers everything you could want! Dreams, desires, plenty to do or not do, options, flexibility, great food, fun and sun, anytime of the year. Whether you are on a budget or not, you get all this and more!!!

Calling All Agents!
I have always wanted to be a secret agent! For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be James Bond. I mean…..who wouldn’t? I would love nothing more in life than to sip Martini’s (shaken, not stirred), bed beautiful women (Jane Seymore), and defeat scary bad guys (Jaws) for a living…..not to mention having the best collection of cars and gadgets known to man!!
I travel quite a bit for business (good cover, huh?), and on my last flight home the airline was screening “Goldfinger”. It is by far my favorite Bond movie, starring Sean Connery. Connery is the consummate Bond. A had a few Martini’s on the flight, and was ready to save the world by the time we arrived in New York.
I realized I had a bit of a buzz as I waited for my luggage. I was hardly intoxicated, but I was certainly feeling no pain. Aye……it’s not easy being a secret agent (inner monologue – thick Scottish brogue). It took a while for my suitcase to arrive on the carousel. To be honest, I was getting rather dizzy watching it go round and round and round again. And out of the blue, I saw her standing there.
I swear to you, on everything I hold dear, that it was her. I couldn’t begin to explain it. I had just seen her on the screen during the flight, and here she was standing beside me at the airport. It was Pussy Galore! I almost dropped my X-Ray specs!!
As Bond-like as possible, I tried to play it cool. It was imperative that I speak with her. Think about the mission. “Good evening, fair lady”, I said (again, thick Scottish brogue). She smiled and said something I cannot recall. I honestly don’t know what she said, but I am almost positive that I heard what I did.
“My name is Pussy Galore”, I heard. Obviously I responded, as coolly as possible, “I must be dreaming”. She bent over and picked her suitcase from the carousel, winked at me as she placed her business card in my hand, and strutted away. I just stood and watched as she wandered off into the crowded airport, only once looking back to smile. It all happened in slow motion. Fade to black.
I was shaken awake by the stewardess upon our arrival in New York. I must have fallen asleep, martini in hand, watching “Goldfinger”. What a strange dream! I looked all around for Ms. Galore as I waited for my luggage. I picked my Zero Halliburton aluminum suitcase, and hailed a cab. I’m sure I was being followed.

You can find several adventure programs that are created around the extreme sports you’re most interested in — such as skydiving, white water rafting or rock climbing — and they are available almost everywhere in the world — from Africa to Istanbul to the Arctic Circle.
Want to do more than lay around on a tropical beach and work on your tan? What about visiting another country and helping to build a home for a low-income family? Rebuilding a community after a natural disaster? Or working with orphans in a third-world country? Check with your local United Way or faith-based organization. Many nonprofit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity or the Red Cross organize special trips for people who want to make a difference.
Or, if you’ve always wondered what Green Peace Volunteers do or wanted to work on a scientific exhibition digging up fossils or exploring the ocean, why not give them a call, to see if you could spend your vacation as a working volunteer?
What about learning a foreign language? (Your local community college probably offers “immersion” vacations as a member of a language class. During your vacation, you stay as a guest in someone’s home, and have the opportunity to live like a native. You’ll become totally immersed in the country of your choice, having the chance to speak the language with your hosts, learn the best places to visit, and getting to eat home cooked meals.)
